The Best Learning Environment
For many generations, we have been told that parents are not capable of teaching their own children. We have been lead to believe that the best learning environment for a child is a building that they are expected to sit in for hours a day. In this environment, meeting standards are prioritized over critical and creative thinking. Children are not allowed to be children. Instead of learning through play and exploring the world students are taught to follow directions and memorize facts.
When a parent decides to homeschool their child, there is that fear of not being a good enough teacher for their child and nor being able to meet your own child’s needs. Many of you forget that you have been teaching your child and meeting their needs since before they were born. When it comes to homeschooling, you’ve been doing it all along. It just requires a little more time and resources as they get older.
For a student to learn in their own home where there is more flexibility and familiarity is the best option in most cases. This allows a child the chance to learn and grow at their own pace, in their own way. It gives them plenty of extra time to play, read, and explore. The amount of time spent learning at home is much smaller than the amount of time spent learning in a traditional classroom.
For subjects that are harder for a parent to teach their own child, there are so many resources (like The Scrunch) to help your child succeed in that subject area. Homeschooling is not teaching your child on your own. It is a chance to choose what is best for your child as they learn and grow. What is best for one kid, may not be what is best for another. And what is best will likely change over time as your child learns and grows.
The best learning environment for your child is one where they are continually set up for success. The traditional school environment rarely provides that for most children.
